Unable to boot CLD 17.12 x86-64 live USB

hi folks!

So I downloaded iso, check md5sum, prepare USB flash drive using unetbootin.
Tried to boot on my Thinkpad t420s, but after short splash screen I can see only blank screen. When I switch console I can see some error messages (which I’ll update to this post if needed)
I’ve repeat this steps several times with different USB drives and also my second Thad t440s with the same result.
Then I tried to use older iso CLD 17, and voila it works. I suspect there could be a problem in the image but of course it can be something else happening which I’m not aware of.

It looks like your issue is similar to that one

You can try to install older release and update it (while sticking with 4.9 kernel) but this will be really long process, or wait for next “current release” with newer kernel so maybe it would work.

if you are on winblowz try with rufus. if on lin try with dd if=iso_file of=/dev/your_usb bs=4M
i did this (once with cinnamon iso and second time with kde iso) without problem. ah yes and imagewriter from gentoo-zh repo. that is SUSE image writer which works ok too (never had any issue with any lin distro when burned on usb with it)

You’re right Tomasz. After using dd instead of unetbootin I was able to continue without black screen but I ended up with kernel panic anyways.
However I’m using 14.14.12 on my running machine without problems. It seems the 4.14.8 (in my case 4.14.9 used in last release) kernel some issues.

Thanks for the suggestion ‘x y’. Using dd over unetbooin gives much better results (strange, as I’m using unetbootin for ages without problems). However newest release 17.12-x86-64 is impossible to boot, as I got kernel panic (release uses kernel 4.14.9).

If you already have a CL, you can use ‘cl-install-flash’. Unlike other utilities, it formats a USB flash drive in fat32. This allows you to create multi-boot versions and make changes to the image of the system:
